May is named for Maia, the Greek goddess of foliage, fertility, and spring. It is a magnificent month for seeing the magic in nature: thrushes and robins begin to sing, badgers bed down in underground tunnels to keep their cubs warm, and orchids come into bloom, offering a tasty treat for honey bees. I hope you have time to experience the beauty and fertility of the earth this month, perhaps in a weekend wander around a farmer’s market or a quiet walk in the woods.

This month’s The Spiritual Read focuses on the magic in nature. The poem of the month is by the wonderful American poet Walt Whitman. This month, enjoy Come, Said My Soul from the inspired American poet Walt Whitman. He reflects on the relationship between the body and soul and commemorates their shared experiences on Earth, which will serve as a reminder of their unity even after death.

Come, said my Soul
Such verses for my Body let us write, (for we are one),
That should I after death invisibly return,
Or, long, long hence, in other spheres,
There to some group of mates the chants resuming,
(Tallying Earth’s soil, trees, winds, tumultuous waves),

Writing as a Spiritual Practice: Seadna

The seadna is an Irish poetic form with four-line stanzas and quite a lot of rules about rhyming and syllables.  Start by finding a quiet space.  Finding inspiration in nature, or using this poem to capture the magic in a moment is ideal.

  • Each stanza has four lines

  • There are eight syllables in lines one and three; seven syllables in lines two and four

  • Lines one and three end with a 2-syllable word; lines two and four end with a one-syllable word

  • Lines two and four rhyme

There are more rules about connecting words through alliteration, but I think the four rules above are enough for now.
