I visited one of my favorite Thin Places this fall, Knowth, one of Ireland's three great neolithic passage tombs, home to the largest collection of megalithic art in Europe, and a 5000-year-old spiritual and cultural enigma. I lay on one of the smaller satellite tombs, feeling the presence of the ancestors, staring at the delicate clouds, and thinking about the druids who divined wisdom and prophecy from their patterns and movementsβ€”an extraordinary experience.

Writing Exercise: In a Flash

Grab a pen and paper, or sit down at your keyboard and prepare to write Flash Fiction! Flash fiction is brief (a few words to a few pages) and has an air of spontaneity but includes traditional story elements, such as a plot arc, conflict, character arc, and a surprise twist. This differentiates Flash Fiction from short stories or vignettes, which can simply convey feelings or experiences.

Origins of Flash Fiction

While as old as the fable, the form was popularized by writers including Walt Whitman, Kate Chopin, and Ambrose Bierce in the nineteenth century, but two of the best-known flash fiction stories are more recent.

How to Write Flash Fiction

  • Use strong imagery. To make every word count, visualization can help your readers.

  • Use restraint. Focus on the particular moment, not the description of an entire scene.

  • Don’t spread your story too thin. Introduce one or two characters max.

  • Try first-person narrative, which can quickly connect with the reader and allow you to express more in fewer words.

  • Surprise! End your story with a different emotional tone than that of the start. The surprise takes the reader on a journey.

  • Find a clever title. Since you have few words in the narrative, you can pack a lot of meaning into the title.  Refer back to Joyce Carol Oates's example above.

This month's book nook photo is my own! This is my tiny oasis of green in a heavily urbanized area in Central Dublin, which is surprisingly quiet considering the location. Since I spend much of the year in New York, I’ve treasured waking up to coffee and a book on my peaceful, little terrace this summer. My late mother’s statue looks on and a tiny robin hops about. One of life’s little joys.
