I love May. I love stepping outside into the warmth, closing my eyes and turning upward to the sun. It’s a month of color and promise, the excitement and anticipation of which can be felt everywhere we turn our focus. Wonderful!

For April, I chose ‘May’ by Christina Rossetti I love the grace and mystery she blends with an open question, that leaves us wondering what happened, but also reminds us to be present in each moment because the moments of life are fleeting and cannot be recovered.

Soul Poems

Please enjoy some short poems written by participants of my Soul Writing class series. They wrote such beautiful haikus, sonnets, quatrains, and bardo poems that I thought it would be wonderful to share their work with you here.

Writing Exercise: Melody of May

________________________

Stand still outside in one of your favorite spaces. Close your eyes and still the mind. Become present. Now, allow your ear to follow sounds as they arise and fall. Just noticing the sounds. Allow one to fill the senses and then drift away. Allow another to take its place. Listen for ten or fifteen minutes to this melody of summer. Some sounds will be sonorous and some cacophonous, but don’t discriminate. Allow each sound a place without becoming attached to any.

Now sit with pen and paper and capture that melody in words. It may be a poetic play with words, or it could be a prose piece of memories and associations sparked by the sounds.

Share your pieces with us, and we’ll include them in The Spiritual Read.
