‘Tis the month of love, a bittersweet month for some, but one in which I consciously reflect on all that I love, from my friends, family, pets and plants, to the wildlife, walks, the experience of the trees and the sky, and the magic and mystery of life.

In the moments of our lives, there is an important message for those of us who may feel alone when the world is celebrating togetherness - we are never alone! Our loved ones are only a thought away, and we are surrounded by a love that finds its deepest expression in our spiritual being and in the abundance of compassion and kindness we can offer others.

Writing Exercise: Embodiment

To write is to understand your subject implicitly, to convey experience, presence, and inherent sensibility. However, as my Zen Master often says, ‘when other people speak, we hear our own stuff.’ So how can we get past ourselves to be the other?

This month, to accept the challenge, look around your immediate environment, allow yourself to be drawn to an object (not a pet, which is too easily anthropomorphized) and then write a sonnet or quatrain from that object’s experience of its place in the world. Don’t identify what the object is.

Sound silly? Try it. You’ll be surprised how this practice of ‘otherness’ helps shift your perspective.
