I often think April is the kindest month. The happy daffs are in full bloom. It’s neither too hot nor cold, and the frequent showers can even leave places like New York City feeling fresh and hopeful. I love listening to the rhythm of the rain and inhaling the cool, clean air.

This month’s book love comes from the lovely Véronique Lozano whom I met just before the pandemic through Raphael, a mutual friend who sadly passed from Covid shortly afterwards. Raphael was (and is) a wonderful man, and it was such a treat to hear from Veronique again.

Sonnet

The sections of yourself float into the air,

Each gracefully connected by a thread,

It seems incredible to see your strength,

You hold yourself so gently.

The beautiful patterns that I see,

As you dance through the room,

Negative spaces that present themselves,

They are the outline of you.

Becoming myself in this space,

I try and I try to please,

The pleasure of water soothes me,

As I pick myself up from decline,

Hoping to spread my colors,

Amazing for all to see.

Writing Exercise: Morning Pages

Julia Cameron’s book The Artist’s Way includes a practice called Morning Pages. This wonderful practice involves handwriting three pages of stream-of-consciousness writing first thing in the morning.

This month, adopt the Morning Page habit. There’s no right or wrong way to do them. Just put pen to paper and write down anything that comes to mind. Keep writing. Don’t overthink it. Just let your consciousness stream onto the page. When you’ve written three, stop. It doesn’t matter where you are. You’ll be amazed at the insights you garner over the course of 30 days.
