Psychic investigation involves the use of extrasensory perception to connect with the energy imprint of the victim - not the victim directly.
When working with photos of strangers, you’re practising psychometry — using ESP to gather accurate information about an object's history by making physical contact (in this case, the photograph and its image).
If you sense the cause of death, this too is a connection to the residual energy imprint — not a direct connection with the victim.
Using Mediumship
Only professional mediums may connect directly with a victim, and only when working with the victim's family or friends. As in all mediumship, the bond between people enables the connection (which is why every medium can’t simply contact Elvis Presley on demand).
If the victim comes through during such a session, your detection skills can help you interpret the information with greater clarity and specificity.
